Jammu and Kashmir Police Detain Nearly 50 People in Srinagar During Pro-Farmer Protests

Published on

On Friday, the Jammu and Kashmir Police detained nearly 50 people in Srinagar during a pro-farmer protest outside the Press Enclave. The protest was in support of the farmers’ demands for a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for crops and was planned in response to the Samyukta Kisan Morcha’s call for a ‘Bharat Bandh’.

The leaders and activists were detained by police near Pratap Park on Residency Road as they were assembling for protests and taken to Kothibagh police station. Among those detained were Kulgam District Development Council (DDC) chairman Mohammad Afzal, Apple Farmers’ Federation of India president Zahoor Ahmad Rather, and general secretary Abdul Rasheed.

CPI(M) leader M Y Tarigami condemned the police action and said, “Condemning in no uncertain terms the use of forces against the peaceful protest of Apple Farmers’ Federation of India, scheme workers and CITU leaders organised in response to Grameen Bharat Bandh.”

Farmers from Punjab began their ‘Delhi Chalo’ march on Tuesday but were stopped by security personnel at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana. The protesting farmers have been camping at the border points ever since. Their agitation entered the fourth day on Friday.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police’s crackdown on pro-farmer protests reached the Valley as the police detained dozens of people, including trade union leaders and activists who rallied in the peasants’ support.

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of over 40 farmer unions, has called for a nationwide strike to press the government to accept the agitating farmers’ demands, including a legal guarantee of MSP for crops.

The crackdown on protesters has been met with criticism, and many have condemned the use of force against peaceful protests. The pro-farmer protests have gained momentum in recent times, and farmers across the country have been demanding better prices for their crops and protection against cheap imports.
