Legal Setbacks for Imran Khan: Former Pak PM and Wife Sentenced to 7 Years for Unlawful Marriage

Third Adverse Ruling This Week Adds to Imran Khan’s Legal Woes Ahead of Elections

Islamabad: In a series of legal blows, former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Khan were sentenced to seven years in prison and fined by a court that deemed their 2018 marriage as violating the law. This marks the third adverse ruling against the embattled leader within a week, creating further challenges as national elections approach, from which he is barred from contesting.

Recent Legal Developments: Imran Khan, aged 71, has faced recent legal setbacks, receiving a 10-year sentence for leaking state secrets and a 14-year sentence, alongside his wife, for the alleged illegal sale of state gifts. The latest verdict stems from the court’s ruling that their marriage in 2018 violated legal provisions.

Marriage Controversy: The court found that Bushra Khan had not completed the waiting period mandated by Islam, known as “Iddat,” after divorcing her previous husband before marrying Imran Khan. The couple signed their marriage contract, known as “Nikkah,” in a secret ceremony in January 2018, seven months before Imran Khan assumed the role of Prime Minister. Controversy arose regarding the timing of their marriage, with initial denials followed by a later confirmation by Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Both Imran and Bushra Khan denied any wrongdoing in connection with their marriage.

Legal Consequences: The court imposed fines of 500,000 rupees ($1,800) on each of them. Imran Khan is currently in prison in Rawalpindi, while his wife is serving her sentence at their residence in Islamabad. Imran Khan already faces a 10-year disqualification from holding public office, and it remains unclear whether the newly imposed sentences will run concurrently or sequentially.

These legal developments add a layer of complexity to the political landscape as national elections loom, with Imran Khan unable to participate due to the disqualification and legal troubles. – The Blaze Times
